Dear Reader,
Ends and new beginnings this month. First, we bring you the 7th and final volume of the gorgeous Complete Collection of Valerian, packed full of ground-breaking sci-fi as usual. Are your shelves groaning under the weight yet?
But science-fiction fans need not worry, for we also debut a new series written by Leo, creator of The Worlds of Aldebaran, and illustrated by Icar: Distant Worlds, a self-contained story in five volumes, distinct from Aldebaran – although readers will recognise Leo’s gift for creating strange extra-terrestrial creatures and ecosystems. A lost father, An adventurous young man and a planet-wide mystery – what more does anyone need?
Then it’s the return of Largo Winch, but with a new writer at the helm: Eric Giacometti, veteran novelist and reporter, takes over from Jean Van Hamme, and does it in style, bringing Largo up to date on 21st century financial practices – with the usual trail of bodies and high-speed chases, of course!
Finally, our newest Lucky Luke brings the Lonesome Cowboy all the way across the Atlantic to … Paris, the City of Light! A far cry from his usual open skies of the West, but who better to protect Lady Liberty, after all?

Not only is this the seventy first Lucky Luke we publish, but this is also the latest one! A Cowboy in Paris by Jul and Achdé will be coming out on 2 November in French and in English – how’s that for quick delivery, hmm?!

I reviewed no. 8 –The Arena back in April and to be honest I opened this new album up and sat back to enjoy.  I then had difficulty remembering what had gone on before as this is seven months later and I read a lot.  In fact, I think that I may be missing an album as certain references drew a blank from me.  Cinebook does seem to be getting long delays in books appearing –this album is designated August 2018 and I have waited but it is still on the site as This product is currently not available.
A pity because I do love this series and the characters in it  interact well. I initially stated that I wondered whether this would work.  Violence, scary scenes, killings and all the other things do work and not an adult in sight.  I will warn you to prepare for a shock at the end of this one.

I would hate to see Alone as a movie or TV series because it works so well in comic book format.  A winner!

Among all the things that make Gomer such a lovable rascal, there are two that are instantly recognisable: his car, and his goofophone. His old lemon, favourite target of the constabulary and every pedestrian’s nightmare, is responsible for half the pollution in town – as well as many of the more … exotic accidents.
The rest of the latter are mostly the result of the terrible ‘musical’ instrument put together by Gomer – stiff competition for the Trumpets of Jericho!
Unfortunately, in my current state humour of any kind is lost on me. I showed this to a couple of people who thought it was quite “fun” and “funny” –so you need not depend on the opinion so you need not depend on a bearded, bipolar miserable old git!  The artwork and colours are great as always and I did enjoy the previous Gomer Goof books!
In this day and age we need more laughs and if Lucky Luke ain’t your style try Gomer Goof!

I have enjoyed these Trentbooks and each one has been tinged with a certain atmosphere that carries you along with the story.  This one had me asking a lot of questions –and I am not going to give away the twist ending.
I cannot fault the art and colour work.  Spot on.  The story –excellent!  It really made me wonder what the hell was happening with Trent.

This one gets 15 out of 10 (my blog I can give whatever rating I want 😛 )

Fortunately, here is the definitive version at last, restoring the unvarnished truth of what is another triumph of … Lucky Luke!
Wow.  70 comic albums which I think is Cinebook’s longest running series.  That is an incredible achievement and as I have said before, it opens up the world of Lucky Luke to a whole new generation –plus readers who have only seen five previous English language editions appear (in the 1980s).
What can you say about this series, the writing and the art that has not been said 70 times already?!  Remembering that I never liked Lucky Luke to start with it is surprising how fond I’ve grown of the character.  Not your serious Western and definitely not Blazing Saddles style Western –a bit more like Support Your Local Gunfighter/Sheriff.

Considering the UK has nothing to really encourage the comic book interest of youngsters all I can say is thank heavens for Cinebook, Lucky Luke and their other series!!

BEAR’S TOOTH 2 – HANNA

Hanna, who’s a legendary figure of the Third Reich and an exceptional test pilot…
The plot thickens as Max is infiltrates and finds what might be loosely called a “love interest”.  The German body count grows and quite by accident Hanna discovers who the “new guy” is.
If you like your Second World War stories to be full of action, properly drawn uniforms and lots of military hardware then you should not pass this one!  And there is, of course, the question (after learning more about their childhood) of whether Max will kill Hanna?
