Two urbanites, Gerald and Anne, had just settled in a village in the Ardennes with their son Peter, an autistic teenager. The first contacts with the locals are a neighbour whose manner is very elusive, a rather peculiar priest and a strange woman dressed all in black, known as the “Weasel.” These initial contacts are difficult, sometimes heated, however the tension heightens when Gerald, a television producer who is very condescending vis-à-vis the “superstitious” local, decides to make a documentary about the ancient rites of sorcerers still alive in rural areas.
Unspoken feelings and old hatreds are still raw and to cap things off strange events are increasing. The new pregnancy of Anne becomes an issue in the clashes that shake this wild countryside …
In late 1981, shortly after seeing Silence triumph, Didier Comès undertakes the publication of his new graphic novel: The Weasel. A great story with fantastic art which, more than three decades after its release, has lost none of its dark beauty.
My only problem here was working out whether the film Comes saw was “Silence Triumphant” or “Triumph of Silence”.
The production on this book is superb and it all adds to the style of Comes’ art. Characters are almost “grotesques” and the wonderful black and white art dazzles the eyes. The book is not heavily dialogued so is no great trial. You see, black and white artwork can be as good, if not better, than colour on so many levels.
Superb.

Soraia and Mehdi, brother and sister are from a very poor family living in the Rif region of Morocco. However, the destruction of a “unique local resource” –hashish plantations- forces the family to sell Soraia to the citizens of Tetouan. Becoming one of the countless modern day slaves in the Near and Middle East. She is over-exploited, humiliated, beaten and subject to the lust of her boss.
Mehdi, learning of his sisters fate, sets out to rescue her. There follows a succession of painful trials and fateful encounters, his quest sees him encounter the militant jihad, who are violent, bigoted and who exploit for their benefit the squalor of the slums Morocco…
The art style is not quite something I can get used to but I have only read through this book once. It is graphic and pretty ****** grim. But it tells a story that many of those sold into slavery might well recognise and it is a story that needs telling.

September 1915; the Meuse Front. Miraculously surviving a French artillery bombardment, a German soldier, Goetz von Berlichingen, wanders alone in a devastated landscape. Strange visions – a flute player, animals that have survived the ravages of war, a child playing with a rabbit who leads him to a castle, also inexplicably spared the fighting. The castle residents, a curious family some of whom are hostile and others more friendly, all seem to know him personally. The young soldier soon discovers that his hosts represent different aspects of death. They are left to decide what to do with him …
This is another reprint of Comes work and it over thirty years there seems to have been no loss of impact in his work. The solid black and white is replaced by minute stippling for shading and it works marvellously. The characters, scenes and settings as well as aircraft and paraphernalia of the First World War are spot on.
And there is a nice text feature along with colour photographs about Comes and his work –though it is a little beyond my French!
Three Comes books released by Casterman in one fell swoop. One of these surely has to tempt you!

EXpo EXclusive Screening – The 99
We are hyper excited to announce an exclusive screening of the new international animated series of The 99 by Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa (a series recently given a special mention by US President Obama at the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship held in Washington)
From The 99 website: Teshkeel Media Group was formed in 2004. It’s business and social objectives were to create exciting animated television programs for young families and children throughout the world. The idea was to offer new role models of superheroes born of Middle East history and Islamic archetypes that possess values shared by the entire world.
THE 99 are those young role models.
Eventually, there will be one from each of ninety-nine countries. They are roughly split between boys and girls. Each of THE 99 possesses a certain gemstone that has imbued in it a special power. While each of our heroes has their own power, each of their powers is enhanced by working in teams of three. Our characters must decide which three heroes and sets of powers are best suited to solve the problem at hand. It is through this process that the values of tolerance and diversity become one of THE 99’s most valuable continuing story themes.
Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, the creator of THE 99 saw a need for new role models that children from China to Chad to Canada could relate to as their own without the parochial influence of any nation, religion or individual.
For its entry to the animated television world, Teshkeel Media Group first launched THE 99 in a traditional comic book series. By 2011, THE 99 team had flourished and partnered with DC Comics’ Justice League of American standing cape to shoulder with the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to defeat the friends of evil.
Soon THE 99 will appear on television screens throughout the world. With its production partner, Endemol UK, the world’s largest syndicator of television programs, twenty-six episodes of THE 99 animated television series are reaching completion. Another twenty-six have been commissioned.
Independent investors and financial institutions from the Middle East, Europe and the United States have financed this huge investment.
You can see a trailer for the 1st season on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnfY5BLsRBw
The Official website for the comic book series is: http://www.the99.org/
We will be screening the episode at 12:00 on the Saturday in the Main venue and then again in the evening at 19.00 in the Ramada Hotel (free entry to all)

Comic Conventions The Comic Conventions website was started out of sheer frustration in 2010. There seemed to be nowhere that had an easy to follow, at a glance central listing of all the UK conventions throughout the calendar year; And something had to be done about it. The site lay relatively dormant up until October 2011 when Dom joined the fold and got to work expanding and promoting the site. In came interviews, news, reviews and photos of the different events. Exclusives such as bringing Ebas to the UK for the London Super Comic Con and an interview with Adam Hughes only made the site more popular. Ever keen to expand, the site welcomed Patrick (Custard Trout) to the journalistic fold adding his unique writing skills and Jedi philosophy to the existing skillset. Now getting in excess of 5,000 hits a month and ever climbing, we are attending the conventions as exhibitors to help promote our labour of love. If you are about, and you like what we are doing, come see us and help ‘spread the word’ |
